Hastelloy plate
What is Hastelloy plate ?

Hastelloy is a nickel based super alloy that shows high resistance to corrosion. It also has chromium and molybdenum as its main constituents. The hastelloy plate is also known for its high temperature resistance and hence can be used in industries like chemical, petrochemical, oil & gas, etc. The material is quite ductile and hence can be formed easily. There are different grades of hastelloy like B, C, G and N. They possess good weldability and can be welded using standard procedures.

Hastelloy plate suppliers recommend the products for high temperature conditions because of their high melting point in the range 1323-1371 °C. Their min tensile strength can range between 690-783 MPa, depending on the specific grade. The plate also shows high resistance to different oxidizing agents and acids. Apart from normalized corrosion resistance, hastelloy can also withstand uniform attack and stress corrosion cracking.

What is the hardness, thickness and corrosion rate of Hastelloy strip?

The hardness of the hastelloy strip will vary with its thickness. For example, 0.012”-0.090” thick sheet can have a hardness of 87 in Rockwell B, and for 0.091-0.312”, the hardness is 92.

The standard thickness of the strip is between 0.03-6 mm but clients can request customization based on their application. The corrosion rate of hastelloy is between 0.1-0.5 mm/y.

What are major 3 disadvantages of Hastelloy cold rolled plate ?
  • The hastelloy cold rolled plate has a high cost due to its chemical composition.
  • The material is susceptible to stress corrosion cracking when exposed to high levels of stress like during machining.
  • It is not compatible with all metals, especially lead to zinc.
Which is best Hastelloy or Inconel sheet ?
  • Hastelloy strips offer better resistance to certain corrosive chemicals than Inconel.
  • Inconel can withstand higher temperatures without losing their mechanical properties.
  • Hastelloy coil is recommended where impact resistance is crucial. Inconel is used for high temperature and stress applications.
  • Hastelloy is generally more expensive than Inconel, and hence, the latter has greater availability.
Features of Hastelloy sheet
  • High nickel and molybdenum contents
  • Exceptional resistance to strong solutions of oxidizing salts
  • Excellent corrosion resistance
  • Low carbon content which minimizes grain-boundary carbide precipitation
  • Resistance to localized corrosion such as pitting
