What is Incoloy 800 tube ?

Incoloy 800 is a high performance super alloy that is known for offering good resistance to corrosion and oxidation. They can retain their mechanical strength at elevated temperature conditions. What temperature does Incoloy 800 tubing work?

Incoloy 800 tubing has a wide working temperature range of 20-800 °C. This means the tubes can be suitably used in room and elevated temperatures.

They are also highly resistant to oxidizing, carburizing and reducing atmospheres. The microstructure of the incoloy 800 material remains stable at high temperatures and it shows good scaling resistance too.

What are the disadvantages of UNS N08800 redrawn tube ?
  • The UNS N08800 redrawn tube has less weldability, hence the welding technique must be chosen carefully. Also, post weld heat treatment might be required to minimize the risk of weld related issues.
  • Incoloy 800 can be relatively expensive.
  • The material has a high coefficient of thermal expansion and not suitable for applications that require dimensional stability.
  • It can become brittle at cryogenic temperatures and when exposed to hydrogen containing environment.
  • The tubes might need extra maintenance when exposed to a highly corrosive environment.
Is nickel alloy 800 welded tube easy to cut?

Incoloy 800 material can become relatively hard in the annealed state. The high hardness can make it difficult to cut nickel alloy 800 welded tubes. Also, it is crucial to use the right cutting tools like the carbide ones which are known for their durability and wear resistance.

Apart from these, selecting the right cutting method and coolant can impact the ease of cutting. Proper selection of cutting speed and feed rate is also very important.

Is alloy 800 tube ductile or brittle?

The alloy 800 tube shows ductility under normal operating conditions and temperatures. It can retain its ductile properties in elevated temperature conditions and thus, the tubes can withstand mechanical stress without getting brittle.

However, the inconel 800 tube can become brittle at at extremely low temperatures, below -150 °C. Also in heat treated or annealed conditions, the material is susceptible to hydrogen embrittement.
