There are many aspects that one can consider while purchasing a 904l stainless steel flange such as availability of the flange, demanded quantity, etc.
When dealing with high corrosion resistance or just ideally, analogy of a 904L SS forged flange is equivalent across a wide range of applications. But to make it even more corrosion resistant, unique layer or coating of Zinc, Nickel, or pasting of chromium can be added. This is one of the reasons why it relatively lasts for a long period of time.
SS 904L Pipe Flanges
904l stainless steel blind flange
DIN 1.4539 slip on flange
Mechanical properties of a 904L flange include elongation of 35%, 144 deg celsius of melting point, 515 MPa and Psi of 75000 tensile strength, density of 8.0 g/cm3. It composes 1 % Copper, 23 % Nickel, 19% Chromium, 4 % molybdenum, 0.045 % Phosphorous, 0.20 % Carbon, 1 % silica, 2 % Manganese and 0.035 % Sulphur. Due to some of these properties, it has moderate level machinability.
Due to low alloy composition, its machining is lower than nitride stainless steels. With respect to hardness, it ranges between 150 to 220 HB. Flanges such as UNS N08904 socket weld flanges retain pressure in high pressure areas, and are more resistant to Sulphur acids.

AISI 904L reducing flange inherit a property of low temperature strength, thereby becoming an ideal solution for cryogenic applications. As a result, ASTM A182 F904L slip-on flange is widely used in storage tanks and heat exchangers. Due to it non-magnetic nature, it is also prone to salt-water corrosions. Adding to this is its excellent corrosion resistance and thermal expansion.
Gaskets are considered to be one of the most essential materials which is generally placed between surfaces which are flushed to make a channel fluid conveying. There might be surfaces which might be even or straight. But gaskets play a major role to ensure that fluid might move more conveniently by creating a gap.
For choosing gasket materials, we should consider the following points without fail:
SA 182 904L weld neck flange, are butt-welded to a pipe and known to provide connection without any leaks. Most often used in high pressure applications, mainly in oil and pipelines, and are recommended when frequent dismantling is not needed.
ASTM A182 F904L slip-on flanges, which has a design which is meant to slip over at the end of the pipe and are then welded back in original place. The only difference between slip-on flanges and weld neck flanges is that, in slip-on flanges, it is used in scenarios which deals with low-pressure, such as water and gas pipelines.
