What is super duplex round bar?

Super duplex stainless steel has a dual ferritic and austenitic structure that has iron, chromium, nickel and molybdenum in the alloy. The super duplex round bar possesses high tensile strength and resistance to pitting and stress corrosion at moderate temperatures. The material can be hard worked between 1875 and 2250 °F and then solution annealed at min 1925 °F. This is followed by air cooling or rapid water quenching to get round shaped ASTM A276 super duplex cold drawn bar.

The super duplex SS rounds are used for heat exchangers, and pressure vessels in different industries like oil & gas, chemical processing, etc. The super duplex material shows a great combination of high tensile and impact strengths. Their low coefficient of thermal expansion and high thermal conductivity make them ideal for mechanical and structural applications. Super duplex is magnetic and they do not require preheating unless condensation on cold metal is to be prevented.

What are super duplex flat bar different surface conditions ? how they differ with each other ?

The super duplex flat bar can be given different surface treatments to enhance its corrosion resistance and appearance. Some of the common finishes would include:

  • No. 1 Finish- Here the flat bar is hot rolled, annealed and pickled to give a dull, non-reflective surface with a rough texture.
  • No. 2D Finish- Cold rolling, annealing and pickling are done to achieve a smoother and more reflective surface than no. 1 finish.
  • No. 2B Finish - It is a more refined version of the 2D finish to achieve higher surface reflectivity.
  • No. 4 finish- The super duplex alloy rectangular bar undergoes mechanical polishing and they can be used in aesthetic applications.
  • Bright Annealed- This finish gives the most reflective and aesthetically pleasing results and thus, is used in architectural applications.
How do the hardness and toughness of super duplex steel square bar affect its performance?

The super duplex steel square bar shows a good balance of hardness and toughness. High hardness indicates good resistance to wear and plastic deformation along with increased durability. But increased hardness can reduce the toughness which makes the super duplex stainless steel square bar brittle and prone to cracking under high impact. This also means that high toughness will reduce the hardness which will make the bar less suitable for abrasive applications.

Fabricating and welding SDSS hex bar needs some careful considerations to ensure material integrity and mechanical properties.
